Car Free Day & the Sunday Markets of Bogor

Car Free Day & the Sunday Markets of Bogor

If you are in Bogor on a Sunday, set an early alarm. Each week from dawn until mid-morning, the city hosts Car Free Day — the main streets around the centre close to traffic and fill instead with runners, cyclists, families, buskers and a rolling market of food carts. It is the friendliest, most local morning the city offers.

What actually happens

From roughly 6am to 9am, the arteries near the Botanical Gardens become one long pedestrian party. People jog and cycle, kids skate, community groups do aerobics, and vendors line the pavements selling everything from kue putu to fresh coconut. Buskers and small stages add a soundtrack.

It winds down by mid-morning as traffic returns, so this is a get-up-early affair, not a lazy brunch.

What to eat as you wander

  • Traditional snacks — kue putu, serabi, klepon and other jajanan pasar
  • Fresh coconut water straight from the shell
  • Grilled and steamed street bites, cheap and plentiful
  • A cup of local coffee from a roving cart to keep you moving

How to enjoy it

Come with cash in small notes, an empty stomach and no fixed plan. Wander, graze, watch the city exercise, and photograph the good chaos. It pairs perfectly with a bike — Car Free Day is the one morning the main avenues are truly yours.

Getting there from HEBE

This is the easiest outing in this whole guide, because it comes to you. The central location of HEBE Hostel puts the Car Free Day zone within a short walk, so you can roll out of bed and straight into the crowd. No tickets, no transport to arrange — just show up before 9am.

Beyond the food

Car Free Day is more than a moving buffet. Community groups set up along the route with free aerobics and line-dancing, cycling clubs muster in their colours, and small stalls sell secondhand books, plants and local crafts alongside the food carts.

It is also the easiest place in Bogor to simply people-watch. Grab a bench, nurse a coconut, and the whole cross-section of the city drifts past — grandparents power-walking, toddlers on tiny bikes, teenagers filming dance clips. For an hour, you see Bogor entirely at ease with itself.

Skip the lie-in this once. Walk out at 6.30am, buy a coconut, and watch the whole of Bogor jog past — it is the city at its happiest.

The local Sunday

Car Free Day is not staged for tourists; it is genuinely how Bogor spends its Sunday morning, and joining in is the quickest way to feel part of the place. Then amble back to HEBE Hostel for a well-earned second breakfast.
