Few cities have a presidential palace you can admire on a casual walk, complete with a herd of spotted deer grazing the lawns. Istana Bogor, a gleaming white colonial-era palace, sits right beside the Botanical Gardens, and its deer — descendants of animals brought here in the 19th century — are a genuine Bogor institution.
Watching the deer
You do not need a ticket to see them. The deer graze along the palace fence facing Jalan Ir. H. Juanda, and on quiet afternoons dozens gather near the railings. Vendors sell carrots so children can feed them through the fence — a small, joyful ritual that locals have done for generations.
Late afternoon, when the light turns gold on the white facade and the deer drift toward the fence, is the loveliest time to come.
Visiting inside the palace
The palace interior — famous for its art collection — is not a walk-in attraction. Group visits are possible but must be arranged in advance through official channels, usually well ahead and with proper dress. For most travellers, the view from the gardens and the fence is more than enough.

Getting there from HEBE
The palace fence is central and easy to reach. From HEBE Hostel, it is a short walk or a quick Grab, and it sits directly opposite the Botanical Gardens’ main gate — so you can see the deer, then step straight into the gardens.
A palace with a past
The white palace began life in the 1740s as a Dutch governor-general’s country retreat, drawn to Bogor’s cooler air, and was rebuilt after a 19th-century earthquake into the graceful form you see today. Since independence it has served as a state palace, hosting presidents and visiting heads of state.
The spotted deer are almost as old a tradition, their ancestors imported in the colonial era to graze the lawns. Together the palace and its deer make one of the most photographed scenes in West Java — and you can enjoy the whole tableau for free, from the pavement.
