Up a river valley in the Sentul hills, a chain of jade-green pools sits between smooth grey boulders, fed by clear mountain water. Leuwi Hejo — the name means "green pool" in Sundanese — is the most loved of them, and on a hot day there is nothing better than sliding into that cool, impossibly green water.
The hike in
This one asks a little of you. From the car park it is roughly a 30–45 minute walk along a river trail, crossing streams and climbing gently. It is not hard, but it is uneven and slippery in places, so proper footwear matters. Local guides at the entrance can walk you up for a small tip and are worth it for first-timers.
Along the way you pass several pools — Leuwi Lieuk and others — so you can chain a few together into a proper river day.
Swimming safely
- Go in the dry season; after heavy rain the river can rise fast
- Never swim alone, and heed guides if they say the flow is too strong
- Wear sandals with grip — the rocks are slick
- Bring a dry bag; there is nowhere dry to leave valuables
- Cash for the entry gate and parking, roughly IDR 25,000–40,000 total
Getting there from HEBE
Leuwi Hejo is in the Sentul / Karang Tengah area, around 45–60 minutes from central Bogor by car or motorbike. The final stretch is a rough village road, so a motorbike or a driver used to the route is ideal. Chaining the pools
The real reward of a Leuwi Hejo trip is that it is not one pool but a string of them. Above Leuwi Hejo sit Leuwi Lieuk and Leuwi Cepet, each with its own character — some deep and calm for a proper swim, others narrow and fast. Local guides know which are safe on the day.
Give yourself the time to link a few. Walk up, swim, dry off on a warm boulder, then move on to the next — it turns a single dip into a proper river adventure. Just keep an eye on the sky, because these narrow valleys funnel a flash flood fast if rain hits upstream.
Go on a clear-weather weekday, hire a local guide, and you can have an emerald pool almost to yourself before the tour groups arrive.
