Situ Gede: The Lake and Forest on the City’s Edge

Not every Bogor outing needs a mountain and a two-hour drive. On the western edge of the city lies Situ Gede, a broad, calm lake fringed by the CIFOR research forest. It is close, it is free to wander, and it is one of the most peaceful spots within reach of the centre.

What to do here

The joy of Situ Gede is that there is not much to do — and that is the point. Walk the path around the water, hire one of the little boats for a slow paddle, or simply sit on the bank and watch fishermen and families come and go. On the far side, shady tracks lead into the research forest.

Morning is calm and cool; late afternoon glows over the water. Weekends bring local families and food carts, weekdays bring near-solitude.

Good to know

  • Entry is free or nominal; you pay only for a boat or snacks
  • Warungs by the lake sell grilled corn, noodles and coffee
  • The forest tracks are best in the dry morning hours
  • Bring mosquito repellent if you linger near the water at dusk

Getting there from HEBE

Situ Gede sits toward the western edge of Bogor, around 20–30 minutes from the centre by Grab or motorbike. From HEBE Hostel, it is an easy half-day: go out mid-afternoon, walk the loop, and be back for dinner in the city. There is no ticket booth to plan around — just turn up.

Birds, boats and quiet corners

The research forest that hugs Situ Gede makes it quietly excellent for birdwatching, especially in the still early hours before the day-trippers arrive. Bring binoculars, walk the shaded tracks on the far bank, and you will hear far more than you see.

On the water itself, the little rented boats are the whole point on a lazy afternoon. There is no schedule to keep and nothing you must see — just paddle out, drift, and let the reflection of the trees do the work. It is Bogor’s gentlest outing, and all the better for it.

Rent a boat for an hour near sunset. The lake goes gold, the city noise disappears, and you remember Bogor has a quiet side.

A slower kind of day

Situ Gede is the antidote to the checklist. No queues, no entry gates, no rush — just water, trees and the soft edge of the city. It is exactly the sort of low-key, low-impact outing we love recommending to guests at HEBE Hostel who want to feel Bogor rather than tick it off.
