On the edge of the Gede-Pangrango forest near Sukabumi hangs one of the longest suspension bridges in Indonesia — a swaying timber-and-cable span stretched high across a forested gorge. Cross it and you step into Situ Gunung, a beautiful pocket of lake, waterfall and pine forest that makes a genuinely spectacular day trip from Bogor.
The bridge
The famous Situ Gunung Suspension Bridge is well over 200 metres long and strung high above the valley floor. It sways gently as you cross — thrilling but secure, with harnesses provided — and the view down into the canopy is superb. It is the headline, but it is really the gateway to the rest.
Entry is bundled into a ticket of roughly IDR 50,000–100,000, typically covering the bridge crossing and access to the trails and waterfall.
Beyond the bridge: Curug Sawer and the lake
From the far side, a well-made forest trail leads on to Curug Sawer, a wide waterfall you reach via a second, smaller suspension bridge. Elsewhere in the park sits the calm situ (lake) that gives the place its name, ringed by pines. Give yourself a few hours to do the loop properly rather than rushing back over the bridge.

- A light rain jacket; the forest catches cloud even on fine days
- Water and snacks, though warungs cluster near the entrance
- Cash for the ticket, parking and any guide or shuttle

Situ Gunung is near Sukabumi, roughly 1.5–2.5 hours from central Bogor depending on the notorious Bogor-Sukabumi road traffic. The forest around you
Situ Gunung sits on the flank of the Gede-Pangrango National Park, one of Java’s most important mountain forests, and it shows. The trails are lined with tall pines and dense jungle, the air is cool and damp, and birdsong follows you across the bridge and down to the falls.
That protected setting is part of why the place feels special rather than merely photogenic. Stay on the marked paths, keep your voice down near the forest edge, and carry out everything you bring — you are a guest in a living national park, not just at a viewpoint.
Set out at dawn on a weekday. Cross the bridge in the morning mist before the crowds, walk on to the waterfall, and you will have had the best of Situ Gunung by lunch.
Worth the drive
Yes, it is further than most Bogor outings — but the combination of that soaring bridge, the forest and the waterfall makes it one of the most memorable days in the whole region. Head back to HEBE Hostel in the late afternoon, tired and quietly thrilled, ahead of the evening traffic.
