The drive-through safari at Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua is deservedly famous — you roll up your windows, wind through the hills, and zebras, bison and lions wander past your car. But treat that as the opening act. Perched on the cool Puncak slope, the park rewards a full day.
The safari drive, done right
Arrive at opening (around 9am) to beat the Puncak traffic and catch the animals while they are active. Buy carrots at the entrance for the herbivore zones — the deer and llamas will lean right up to the glass. Keep windows firmly closed through the big-cat and bear sections.
Entry for the main park runs roughly IDR 200,000–300,000 per adult depending on the day and packages; weekdays are cheaper and far less crowded.
What most visitors miss
- The night safari — nocturnal animals under soft lights, a completely different mood
- The animal and bird shows, genuinely well produced and fun for kids
- The baby-animal nursery and feeding encounters
- The cable car and rides clustered at the top of the park
Check the daily show schedule at the gate and build your walking loop around it, so you are not sprinting between arenas.
Getting there from HEBE
Cisarua sits up the Puncak road, about 60–90 minutes from central Bogor — but Puncak weekend traffic is real, and the police sometimes run a one-way buka-tutup system. Leave HEBE Hostel early, ideally on a weekday, by car or chartered ride. Our desk can point you to a reliable driver for the day.
Where to eat and rest nearby
Cisarua is packed with places to eat around the park, from roadside sate and Sundanese warungs to the resort restaurants along the Puncak road. Prices climb the closer you get to the gate, so many families pack snacks and save a proper meal for the drive down.
If you want to combine the safari with the tea gardens or an overnight in the hills, the area has plenty of guesthouses and villas. But Cisarua is also close enough to Bogor that most travellers simply do it as a day trip and sleep back in the cooler comfort of the city.
Go midweek and arrive at opening. By the time the weekend crowds hit the gate, you will already be watching lions from your car in the cool morning air.
Make a mountain day of it
The air up here is markedly cooler than the city, so bring a light jacket. Pair the park with a stop at the Puncak tea gardens on the way up or down, then roll back to a warm shower and a quiet bed at HEBE Hostel. It is a big, happy, tiring day — exactly what Cisarua does best.
