What a warung really is
A warung is a small family-run eatery, sometimes a permanent shopfront, sometimes a cart (kaki lima, literally 'five legs') that wheels out at dusk. The magic is the specialisation: a warung usually does one thing, and does it for years, so the sate cart only makes sate, and it is perfect. Trust the specialist over the place with a menu of fifty dishes.
The night menu

Some warung are as much about lingering as eating. At an angkringan-style spot you graze on small skewers and snacks, nurse a sweet tea or coffee, and stay for hours; it is Bogor's version of a late-night hang. The bill stays tiny and nobody rushes you. This is where you actually meet the city.
Eating late, safely and kindly
Night food is safest where it is busiest, high turnover means fresh ingredients, so follow the crowd. Carry small cash, watch a cart cook your food fresh, and it rarely does you wrong. Be a good guest: order, chat, tip a little if you can, and leave the stool for the next hungry soul.
