Weekends in Bogor have a rhythm, and a big part of it is browsing. The city loves a market: fresh produce at dawn, car-free-day stalls, and a genuinely fun secondhand scene the locals call awul-awul. Bring cash, wear light layers, and be ready to dig.
Sunday car-free day
On Sunday mornings the main arteries close to traffic and fill with joggers, cyclists and pop-up stalls. It is equal parts exercise and street food festival: fresh juices, grilled snacks, murukku and secondhand clothes on tarps. Go early, by 6am the air is cool and the best snacks are freshest, and it winds down before the midday heat.
The art of awul-awul
Bogor's thrift culture is serious. Awul-awul stalls, literally 'rummaging', pile imported secondhand clothes into mountains you sift through by hand. Denim, band tees, workwear jackets and the occasional designer piece all surface if you are patient. Prices start absurdly low, often Rp10,000 to Rp50,000, and bargaining is expected.
- Come early for first pick before the racks get churned
- Inspect seams, zips and armpits before you commit
- Carry small notes; vendors rarely have change for big bills
- Wash everything before wearing, always
- Bargain kindly, a smile gets a better price than a hard line
Fresh markets and produce
For a different kind of hunt, the traditional pasar are theatre in themselves, towers of tropical fruit, fresh oncom and tofu, buckets of chillies, and vendors who will slice a fruit open to prove its ripeness. Even if you are not cooking, it is one of the best places to feel the city's daily pulse.
Makers and weekend pop-ups
Bogor's creative scene also throws weekend bazaars, local coffee, handmade goods, plants, and small-batch snacks, often clustered around Sempur and the cafe districts. Follow a couple of local accounts before you visit; the good ones move around and sell out fast.
The best thrift find in Bogor is never the one you planned. Come with no list and let the pile surprise you.
