On the Sukabumi flank of Gunung Gede-Pangrango, a calm lake sits ringed by pine and montane forest, and the air smells of resin and cold water. Situ Gunung has become one of West Java’s favourite easy camps — accessible enough for first-timers, wild enough to feel like a real escape. Which is exactly why how you camp here matters.
The setting
Situ Gunung is a natural lake inside the national-park zone above Kadudampit, at around 1,000 metres. There is a designated campground near the water, forest trails, and — the modern headliner — the famous suspension bridge nearby. The pine plantation gives parts of it an almost alpine feel, and mornings come up cold and misty over the lake.
Camping the low-impact way
A beautiful, popular campground stays beautiful only if everyone treats it gently. The essentials are the same everywhere: pitch on the hardened, designated sites rather than crushing fresh vegetation, keep well back from the water’s edge, and use the toilets provided. Cook on a stove; open fires scar the ground and are often prohibited. And the golden rule at any lakeside camp — nothing but water goes into the lake.

- No soap, food or waste in the lake or streams
- Keep noise down after dark — you share the forest with wildlife and other campers

What to pack
It gets genuinely cold at night up here, so pack warmer than the daytime suggests: a good sleeping bag, an insulating mat, and layers. Add a rain fly and groundsheet — mountain weather turns fast — plus a head torch, and enough water or a way to treat it. Renting gear locally is common if you are travelling light.
Getting there from Bogor
Situ Gunung is on the Sukabumi side, reached via the Bogor–Sukabumi road to Cisaat and up toward Kadudampit — roughly two to three hours from central Bogor depending on that notoriously busy road. Many campers stock up and rest in the city first; a night at HEBE Hostel before or after a camp makes the trip far more comfortable.
Why we bother
A campground loved carelessly becomes a rubbish-strewn field within a few seasons; a campground loved carefully stays a place worth returning to for decades. Camping responsibly at Situ Gunung is not about rules for their own sake — it is about making sure the misty lake that welcomed you still welcomes the next tent just as warmly.
