If Bogor has one street you must walk, it is Jalan Suryakencana, Surken to locals. Running south from the gates of Kebun Raya, it is the city's old Chinatown and its densest, oldest stretch of food. This is a walk you do slowly, on an empty stomach, ready to share plates with strangers.
A street with a long memory
Suryakencana has fed Bogor for well over a century. Peranakan Chinese traders, Sundanese hawkers and Betawi cooks all left their mark, and you can taste that layered history in a single afternoon. The klenteng (Chinese temple) partway down anchors the street's identity, and the shophouses around it still hum with family businesses handed down for generations.
What to eat, in order
Do not try to eat it all in one pass, no one can. Pick a handful, share everything, and pace it with sweet drinks. Most dishes here sit between Rp15,000 and Rp35,000.
- Soto mie Bogor, a beef-and-noodle soup with risoles and a tangle of vegetables
- Laksa Bogor, a milder coconut laksa with oncom, rice cake and boiled egg
- Doclang, potato and rice cake in warm peanut sauce, the local breakfast classic
- Ngohiang, Peranakan fried rolls and fritters with a sweet dipping sauce
- Es pala or cane juice to cool down before the next stop
Best times to go
Suryakencana has two lives. In the early morning it is a breakfast street, doclang and soto mie steaming under tarps by 6am. After dark it becomes a night-market thoroughfare, especially lively toward Ramadan, when the whole strip fills with jajanan and the crowd flows shoulder to shoulder. Both are wonderful; pick your energy.
Walk it like a local
Start at the Kebun Raya end and walk south so the botanical gardens are your landmark home. Carry small cash, most vendors do not take cards. Eat standing or perch on a plastic stool, and if a stall has a queue of office workers, join it; that is the local verdict, no review needed.
On Surken, the oldest stall with the shortest menu is usually the one to trust. They have had a hundred years to get one thing right.
Getting there from HEBE
Suryakencana runs right off the southern edge of Kebun Raya, a short and easy hop from HEBE Hostel. Come for breakfast before the day heats up, or after 5pm when the light goes gold and the grills fire up. Either way, wear comfortable shoes and bring your appetite.
